NFT archaeology seeks to uncover NFT undertakings that shaped modern civilization. All modern NFTs are built on these early relics. As an NFT archaeologist, I’ve dug up previous projects on Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Namecoin.
An early mint date is crucial, but what’s more important is whether a project innovated or advanced the space.
CryptoSkulls, the second 10k PFP project, has renewed interest in previous NFTs. I’ve picked ten historically noteworthy projects after examining hundreds. This list introduces beginners to early NFTs.
SaruTobi – Released Date: May 2016 (Bitcoin)
Christian Moss, an iOS developer, released SaruTobi on December 19, 2014. Tap the screen to spin a monkey and see how far he can fly. Apple wouldn’t let Christian let SaruTobi players pay with Bitcoin. So he allowed players to earn Bitcoin while playing.
A play-to-earn game was born.
Christian learned about EverdreamSoft’s tokenized gaming assets in Spells of Genesis and released NINJASUIT for SaruTobi. It was the first NFT skin, power-up, and play-to-earn game NFT.
The narrative continues. Christian recognized he could lure Spells of Genesis players with their game stuff. He may link their Counterparty mobile wallet to SaruTobi and read their tokens. Using their token inventories, he could unlock game features. Christian added Spells of Genesis SATOSHICARD, SARUTOBICARD, and CNPCARD to Sarutobi in June 2016.
The first time an NFT was compatible between two games. When the three Spells of Genesis cards were used in SaruTobi, the gaming and social media industries’ walled gardens cracked. The metaverse emerged from Web 1.0’s ashes. This moment won’t be fully grasped until the gaming and social media businesses collapse.
Spells of Genesis – Released Date: March 2015 (Bitcoin)
Spells of Genesis is a Bitcoin-based blockchain card game. Each card depicts a period in blockchain history. Spells of Genesis developer EverdreamSoft published FDCARD, the first tokenized game asset.
It was the beginning of a rising wave that would lead to gamers reclaiming control from centralized governing agencies. It ushered in a new era of gaming where users own their digital assets. Spells of Genesis is where blockchain gaming began.
November 2017: CryptoKitties released (Ethereum)
At the peak of the crypto bubble in 2017, breeding these beautiful kitties drove up gas costs and “broke” Ethereum. This was the first blockchain game to go popular, and its buzz coined the term “NFT.”
CryptoKitties was the first ERC-721 token. Most NFTs still employ the ERC-721 standard, which outlines how to develop NFTs on EVM-compatible blockchains.
Due to their endless supply, it’s a frequent misperception that cats are a terrible investment. There will only be 100 founder cats and 50,000 Gen-0 cats, but collectors can explore other niches. Pranksy, Chris Dixon, Nate Alex, and the Axie Infinity creators all started with CryptoKitties. If you ask someone who bred back then, they’ll tell you how much they loved these cats. I plan to give my children the cats I bred during their heyday.
Rare Pepes – Released Date: September 2016 (Bitcoin)
Rare Pepes is an iconic NFT. Collectible cards are a mainstay of online culture and one of the first blockchain art attempts, helping start the crypto art trend. The Series 1, Card 1 that honors Satoshi Nakamoto (the person or organization that created bitcoin) reigns supreme. The 300 Club requires the Nakamoto Card, of which only 300 exist.
CryptoPunks – Released Date: June 2017 (Ethereum)
Even for beginners, these 8-bit avatars need almost no introduction, thus it’s no wonder that CryptoPunks topped our list. Two Canadian software developers started the 10k PFP Twitter trend.
These avatars are art and collectibles, and they’ve become the world’s most iconic NFT. Nine of the rarest aliens have sold for almost $11 million at auction.
Finally. Top NFTs. Never fear if you’re new to Bitcoin and Namecoin NFTs. Emblem Vault, a new cross-chain bridging technology, makes trading them on OpenSea safe. Emblem Vault has more than 29,000 in trade volume, and the Emblem Vault Bot can keep you updated on sales.
This list of early NFT projects isn’t complete. Here are early Ethereum projects. White Rabbit, an NFTs Archaeologist, produced a great Medium essay about Bitcoin and Namecoin NFTs.
